May 17, 2011: For several years I've been contemplating a blog, now that day has come. I've been riding motorcycles for most of my life and have also made more than my share of mistakes. I must admit, the biggest error I ever made came on September 11, 2005, in the form of a nasty 70 Mph crash on my Kawasaki ZX12-R. I was lucky enough to have survived the accident with no lasting physical ailments, no broken bones, not even a scar... just one small burn mark on my knee. I did suffer a concussion however. Many of you might say, "so what, you had a crash..." I might agree with that statement, with one very special note; the crash taught me some valuable lessons! Fortunately, that fateful Sunday, I was wearing some excellent safety gear, a good "Joe Rocket" jacket, a pair of nice gloves and a Shoei full-face helmet. Each played their part in saving me from some nasty injuries, but the Shoei saved my life. When I was much younger, like many, I did some foolish things on a motorcycle. I rode in those days without a helmet, yep, even on the freeway. When I later purchased and started riding with a fair (Bell) helmet, I never owned a riding jacket. That finally came around 2004, just one year before my crash. I hope to use my crash as an example for others, have a look at some other riders... wearing a quality helmet, nice gloves too, then note the rest of their riding gear. A t-shirt, some in shorts, others without gloves. Now imagine one of them in a crash. Rushed to the hospital, they survive the accident because of a helmet, which saves them terrible head trauma, but they suffer miserably for months on end, with stitched-up wounds, and horrible road-rash, perhaps many other unknown injuries too? All of this could have been avoided, by simply wearing a decent jacket and gloves. Even Levis, like I was wearing in my crash, are superior to shorts. And how about those cute girls that ride on the back of their bike? Showing lots of skin, topped with a helmet. Often, these passengers are not even wearing shoes, just sandals or flip-flops. It's great to ride in a t-shirt on a hot summer day or night. However one small, unscheduled mishap can cost you for the rest of your life. Do yourself a big favor and invest in a riding jacket, open the vents and you'll soon discover the air flow will keep you cool, even on a hot day. And remember, you can wipe the sweat off your skin, but a road rash lasts forever! For more on riding safety, read this: Ten helpful tips in preventing motorcycle injuries and accidents.
Until next time, ride smart and please ride safe.
